The last skate of the first month of the new decade won't happen this weekend.

The Prince George Outdoor Ice Oval is closing for the next two days thanks to recent warmer weather in the city, including a high of 6 C expected for today (Jan. 31).

The Ice Oval Society says it hopes to open by Sunday afternoon (Feb. 2) in time for the third annual Snowball Biathlon.

Environment Canada is predicting a mix of sun and cloud with frost and a high of -4 C.

According to the Society, this will be ideal weather for the biathlon, also known as the Oval Olympics, which is an open event for anyone to try.

Participants must skate a lap, throw a snowball at a target and repeat.

Entry fees are by donation and helmets are encouraged for everyone at registration, beginning at 12:15 p.m.

The Snowball Biathlon starts at 1 p.m.
