The Prince George Humane Society is getting $80,000 from the provincial government for its animal welfare program.

The money comes from more than $12 million in new funding for public safety and environment programs to support not-for-profit organizations.

A total of 281 organizations from throughout B.C. will benefit from the funding, with $6.8 million for programs in the public safety sector for restorative justice, firefighting and community safety and $5.9 million for programs in the environment sector for animal protection, conservation and environmental awareness programs.

"I recognize and appreciate the work that local non-profits do for communities throughout the province. Non-profits deliver vital programming that directly supports people throughout B.C. and we want to ensure they have the resources to continue," said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs.

The Prince George Recycling and Environmental Action and Planning Society also received $30,000 in funding.

The funds come from Community Gaming Grants which provide $140 million per year from gaming revenue to support nearly 5,000 not-for-profit organizations that deliver services to people in B.C. communities.
