Supporting local has been the recurring theme for Prince George during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Businesses are trying to stay afloat amid the tough financial times while local health-care services are looking to provide all it can in keeping residents safe and well.

In contributing to that mindset, a new online fundraiser and silent auction is in full force for Prince George to ‘Spread the Local Love’ and help advance services through Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.

The goal, according to a news release, is to offer ‘valuable support’ during the ongoing crisis put to both sides of the spectrum from business to charity.

“Spread the Local Love will make a difference to healthcare right here at home in the North,” said Spirit of the North spokesperson Danielle Greenslade.

“It’s locals helping locals! We’re all in this together, and what better way to show it than supporting a fun and interactive campaign that will help fund equipment for our patients throughout the region. #Safeathome, where it matters the most!”

Spirit of the North is one of 10 total organizations set to benefit from this initiative, which is being hosted by the BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC).

The provincial company says it’s the second major fundraiser it’s taken the reins of since COVID-19 reached B.C. in January last year.

“We know that the pandemic has created a variety of challenging impacts in B.C.,” said Peter ter Weeme, BCLC’s Chief Social Purpose Officer and VP of Player Experience.

“With the cancellation of many in-person events due to COVID-19, our team is consistently looking for new, creative ways to support communities. Our goal through the Spread the Local Love campaign is not only to raise funds that will help local charitable organizations continue to serve the communities where they operate, but also to showcase local businesses hit hardest by the pandemic.”

Residents can either purchase a gift card from one of three local businesses or bid on a silent auction item, with all funds going directly to Spirit of the North.

The businesses are as follows:

  • Farmhouse Catering
  • Sullivan Motor Products
  • Westwood Public House

‘Spread the Local Love’ is currently running until Family Day, Feb. 15.
