The City of Prince George is asking commuters and local residents to be aware of snow removal crews working in your neighbourhood today (Dec. 7).

A recent release says teams went out early this morning on Priority One and Two routes plowing snow and clearing the streets after the Public Works Yard measured almost 10 cm of white stuff after the overnight snowfall.

‘All available resources’ are being deployed for Saturday and, according to operations policy, crews must clear these routes and major sidewalks in the next 48 hours, day and night.

“Overnight tonight, crews will continue plowing priority routes and move into the Carter Light Industrial Area,” the city statement reads.

“Crews will be plowing downtown streets overnight on Sunday to avoid interfering with holiday shopping and Christmas parties during the daytime and overnight tonight. [...] Multiple factors, including temperatures, accompanying weather systems, and total snow accumulation affect operations, timelines, and decisions about equipment deployment.”

The roads that will be tended to this weekend are as follows:

Priority One (Red)

  • Main arterial roads
  • Downtown roads
  • Priority hills
  • Area around University Hospital of Northern B.C.
  • City civic facility entrances
  • Priority parking lots and pathways

Priority Two (Green)

  • Bus routes that are not main arterial roads
  • Commercial and industrial roads

This means residential streets (Priority Three routes) will not be tended to.

According to the City of Prince George, and as detailed in the above graphic, those are added to crews’ to-do list when there’s 12 cm of accumulated snow in a 24-hour span and when Priority One and Two routes are complete.

Residential streets must be plowed 72 hours after the city declares a snow event.

Prince George has 735 km of roads and 189 km of sidewalks to maintain.
