Prince George Cougars’ winless drought continues with Saturday shootout loss

Royals hand Cats their 15th straight setback despite another valiant offensive effort

It was arguably one of the most exciting games to watch at the CN Centre this season.

The Prince George Cougars charged on offense for 60 minutes, something the team has said they’ve wanted to work on for the longest time.

After regulation and overtime couldn’t decide the final score, the Cats went into a shootout against the Victoria Royals Saturday night (Feb. 16), but ex-Prince George teammate Kody McDonald put the dagger in the 5-4 defeat.

Despite the single point as a result of the shootout, this is now the 15th consecutive loss for the Cougars, dropping their record to 16-34-4-2 and still at the bottom of the BC Division.

In his 44th start this season, Taylor Gauthier made 28 saves on 32 shots, while Likely, B.C.’s Griffen Outhouse put together a 27-save performance.

Josh Maser scored two goals in the contest, including one on a power-play, for his team-leading 21st and 22nd markers of the season.

The Houston, B.C. native also got into a scrap with Victoria's Brandon Cutler (pictured in above gallery) as frustrations between the division rivals heated up in the second period.

Vladislav Mikhalchuk (one goal, one assist) and Cole Moberg (two assists) each picked up two points themselves.

Tyson Upper potted his fourth goal of the year in the third period that gave Prince George a 4-3 lead for nearly five minutes until McDonald’s tying tally sent the game into overtime.

The Cougars will enjoy Sunday (Feb. 17) off before starting another doubleheader at the CN Centre.

They’ll face the Everett Silvertips on Family Day Monday (Feb. 18) and Tuesday (Feb. 19) with puck drops at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
