Hockey can be a game of seconds and that was the case for the Prince George Cougars Monday night (Dec. 30) in Kelowna.

The Cats fell 3-2 in overtime to the Rockets by virtue of Liam Kindree’s game-winning goal coming with three seconds left in the extra frame and just missing out on a potential shootout.

Taylor Gauthier faced double the amount of shots as the visiting goaltender, making 30 saves on 33 shots to Roman Basran’s 15 of 17 on the other side.

A silver lining? Prince George was able to earn a season first yesterday as Connor Bowie scored a shorthanded goal to tie the contest at 2-2 over the midway mark of the second period.

The 18-year-old’s seventh of 2019-20 came off a rebound after Reid Perepeluk sent the puck to the Kelowna net and an initial pad save by Basran.

Cole Moberg potted the other tally for the Cougars, a one-time slapper from the point while on a power-play with 52 seconds left in the first period.

The Chicago Blackhawks’ 2019 draft pick went post and in after receiving passes from Ryan Schoettler and Josh Maser, cutting the two-goal deficit to 2-1.

The loss drops Prince George’s record to 9-21-2-3 and are also 1-2 in the three overtime games they’ve played thus far.

The Cats wrap up their 10-game month of December going 3-4-2-1 after Monday’s 16th one-goal decision this year.

The Cougars will begin 2020 and the new decade on home ice this weekend when they revisit the Everett Silvertips at the CN Centre.

Prince George defeated the green and silver south of the border on Dec. 27 in a 4-3 victory.

Games are Friday (Jan. 3, Pride Night) and Saturday (Jan. 4), both with 7 p.m. puck-drops.
