Property owners in the city will have to pay their property taxes this week as they are due on July 7.

City council approved the city’s tax rate bylaw for 2023 back in April, which sets out the property taxes for each of the nine property classes in the city.

The residential property class will pay a cumulative $5.54227 per $1,000 in assessed value in municipal taxes, plus a further $1.15861 per $1,000 in Regional District of Fraser-Fort and Fraser-Fort George Regional Hospital District property taxes.

For an average Prince George house, assessed at $449,618 in 2023, those property taxes will total $3,012.84 ($2,490.79 municipal plus $522.05 regional/hospital district).

Homeowners will also pay property taxes collected by the city on behalf of provincial agencies (school tax, BC Assessment, Municipal Finance Authority, etc.), but may be able to subtract the provincial homeowner grant.

The Provincial Home Owner Grant program helps reduce the amount of residential property taxes homeowners pay on their primary residences and applications can be made through the B.C. government.

The grant is available to homeowners who pay property taxes to a municipality, and for northern B.C. the grant amount is $770.

If a homeowner’s property is assessed below the threshold and they meet certain qualification criteria, they will receive the full regular grant amount. If a property is assessed over the threshold, homeowners may receive a partial grant.

Also those who are a senior, a veteran, a person with a disability or a spouse or relative of someone with a disability may qualify for an additional grant.

Homeowners must apply for the homeowner grant each year and only one grant can be claimed for a property each year.
