Two Prince George city councillors will ask their colleagues to approve the creation of a waterfront plan for areas along the Fraser and Nechako rivers at their next regular meeting in September.
At the Monday, Aug. 18 council meeting, Councillors Tim Bennett and Trudy Klassen gave a notice of motion for the Wednesday, Sept. 3 council meeting.
The motion has four key requests:
- Request that the University of Northern British Columbia create a waterfront plan in collaboration with businesses, the public, investors, community organizations, Indigenous governments as well as provincial and federal government representatives
- Make sure the plan is in line with the city’s strategic plan and includes opportunities to develop business, infrastructure, environmental protection and tourism opportunities
- Set a timeline for the completion of the plan, with the end date no later than Dec. 31, 2026
- Allocate the necessary resources needed to carry out stakeholder engagement that reflects the diverse needs and interests of the community
In a section of their report discussing their rationale, the councillors said that the two rivers are vital assets to the city that present unique opportunities for recreation, heritage and tourism.
Both of September’s council meetings will be held on Wednesdays rather than Mondays. The first is on Sept. 3 and the second is on Sept. 17.
Meetings start at 6 p.m. in council chambers on the second floor of Prince George City Hall. The public can attend the meetings in person or watch a livestream of proceedings on princegeorge.ca.
The livestreams are also archived for future viewing.
