Unseasonably warm weather saw the city break a record.

A 98-year-old temperature record was broken yesterday due to the unseasonable heat in the region.

A temperature of 30.7 C was recorded at the Prince George Airport on May 15, which surpasses the old record of 27.8 set in 1925.

Bobby Sekhon, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada said this weather has been caused by a ridge of high pressure.

“It's very strong and this weather is probably two months early so it's quite unseasonably hot,” said Sekhon.

He noted that for the Prince George area the temperature should cool off slightly compared to the last couple of days.

“But we will see still mid 20s right through to the Saturday with that change in the weather pattern. But for the rest of the work week especially we're looking at least mid 20s.”

An air quality advisory has also been issued for Prince George and the northeast regions of B.C., including Fort Nelson, the B.C. Peace region, Williston, McGregor and Yellowhead, due to wildfire smoke.

This smoke is travelling southward from fires north of Fort St. John.

“We're expecting the smoke to get worse, it may worsen today into overnight periods. So, keep an eye out for that,” noted Sekhon.

“Smoke can be harmful to our health even at low concentrations so we want to reduce your exposure. So kind of limit strenuous exercise and being outside and if you have any discomfort while breathing or feeling unwell, you want to reduce your activity and maybe consult a healthcare professional.”
