A summertime favourite at 7-Eleven will not go ahead this year due to COVID-19.

The company has announced '7-Eleven Day' will be cancelled this year because of physical distancing measures. July 11 celebrates 7-Eleven's birthday with free slurpees to customers.

"We'd love to welcome all Canadians to our stores to celebrate 7-Eleven Day, but it just isn't the responsible choice this year," 7-Eleven Canada Vice President and General Manager Norman Hower says in a press release.

"This is the biggest day of our year, so we are disappointed to make the change, but we're excited about the ways we can celebrate responsibly, all month long.

"Hot Canadian summers aren't the same without a Slurpee. Especially when the new and exclusive Slurpee flavour lineup includes Fanta Fruit Passion, Citrus Lemonade, Mountain Dew Blue Shock, Crush Lite Cream Soda and Sour Patch Kids Tropical Paradise Punch. Canada is the Slurpee Capital of the World, and that alone is reason to celebrate."

Instead, the company says Canadians will still have numerous ways to get a deal on slurpees.

Four $1 slurpee coupons will be deposited into the accounts of 7Rewards Members on July 1 and will be valid all month long.

From July 6 until tomorrow (July 12) there is a Buy One, Get One Free slurpee offer through Uber Eats and Skip The Dishes Apps.

Since 1969, 7-Eleven has worked to make sure communities across Canada have the essentials and comforts they need. To further support the neighbourhoods impacted by COVID-19, the company says they will match in-store cash donations up to $100,000 to Food Banks Canada with the goal of providing 500,000 meals to those in need.

The cash donations to Food Banks Canada at point of sale will be matched June through September, with a cap of $25,000 per month.
