RCMP happenings in Prince Rupert Feb. 15 to 21 reported by RCMP Cst. Erin Stevenson:

An intoxicated male racked up a $50 cab fare and then refused to pay the driver. So the driver treated the passenger to a free ride to the police station. The fair was paid. It is a criminal code offense to refuse to pay a fare and is punishable by a fine not more than $2,000 or imprisonment up to six months in jail or both. Fifty bucks doesn't seem so bad now.

A shoplifter must have come to his senses or was plagued by a guilty conscious, because while police were on scene speaking with the complainant, the shoplifter returned to the store with all the stolen items. All parties involved talked over what had occurred and charges were not pursued.

Members attended a call to assist BC ambulance at the scene where a female lay on the ground

breathing in the recovery position with two males around her. The female was roused by paramedics and left in their care, but he incident didn't end there.

"One of the males at the scene decided the paramedic and police were not doing a good job and decided the best way to help his hurt friend was to yell at everyone involved and get in the way. "After being warned numerous times to back away he was arrested for causing a disturbance."

Still that was not the end of it, said Cst. Erin Stevenson, media relations officer.

"The male started to fight and refused to get into the vehicle; kicking and spitting at members. "Police deployed OC spray and were able to get the male into the vehicle and into cells where he stayed for nine hours and released when he was sober. Not a great way to spend most of a sunny Saturday in Rupert. Like I tell my Grade 5 DARE class, `you make poor choices under the influence of drugs and alcohol".
