A man was killed Wednesday in an exchange of gunfire during a standoff near Valemount with an RCMP emergency response team, the Independent Investigations Office said.
The man died at the scene while a woman is receiving medical care.
Investigators from the IIO were expected to be on the scene by Thursday morning.
The couple were reportedly illegally occupying a home at Kinbasket Lake, just south of Valemount, about 285 kilometres east of Prince George in the Robson Valley. Two rifles were seized, it has also been reported.
The civilian-based IIO, which opened its doors in September 2012, investigates incidents of police-involved death or serious injury for any criminal wrongdoing.
