Pizza deal helps CNC nurses

Student nurses at the College of New Caledonia will be better equipped for their studies as a result of deal cooked up by a pizza boss.

Student nurses at the College of New Caledonia will be better equipped for their studies as a result of deal cooked up by a pizza boss.

A partnership between Panago Pizza on Westwood Drive and CNC will mean discounts to students and college employees on pick-up and deliver orders and give the college's nursing program a slice of the sale proceeds.

The money will be used to purchase four pulse oximeters, a handheld device used by nurses that attaches to the fingertips of patients to determine pulse rate and the level of oxygen saturation in the bloodstream. The $800 instrument is used by nursing students in their lab studies.

"We are proud to be able to put equipment in the hands of students," said Panago Westwood store owner Billy Janjua. "These are the nurses of the future and if we can help them we can improve the future of health care in the area and that would be very special."

Panago is offering a special deal on bulk orders of five or more large pizzas and will donate $1 of the $9.50 price per pie to the CNC nurses. CNC students or employees who show their valid ID cards will receive a 10 per cent discount off their orders. Panago will contribute 50 cents off each of those orders to the nursing program.

"Panago wanted to help us do something health-related at the college and we've been working with them for about a year to figure out something we could do that would help not only the students but health care in the North," said Randall Heidt, CNC's director of communications and development.

"We need four more pulse oximeters and then every student will have one. The better equipment that have and the more experienced they are the better the health care will be once they graduate."
