PHOTOS: This Prince George family built a giant snowman

Mike Hochachka doesn’t mess around with snow

Mike Hochachka had 'building a giant snowman' on his list of things try one day. So on Saturday, Jan. 26 he decided to finally go for it.

With this granddaughter to help, he spent the next six hours constructing what turned out to be a 12 ft. tall snowman that now lives on his property on 15 Mile Road in the Buckhorn area.

“I pushed a trail to the spot with my baby tractor, just for access, then did the rest all by shovel and hand,” Hochachka tells PrinceGeorgeMatters.

He says he did the last 4-5 ft. by ladder and buckets, and it took him roughly 71 trips up and down the ladder to finish the snowman.

He made the buttons and eyes out of tin cans painted black on the ends, and is currently making the snowman a giant hat to complete his outfit.

Hochachka says his granddaughter helped as much as she could until the snowman got too big for her.

“She helped pack some of the middle section till it got to be 8-9 ft then it was too tall for her to be up there,” he says, adding that the process was all down to the ladder, bucket and shovel after that.

“Digging under the top layers of the crystal snow for the stickier snow took more time.”

The giant snowman also wears a blue scarf and a big smile and is most likely the biggest snowman in town.
