PHOTOS: Despite COVID-19, Prince George raises more than $17K for breast cancer research

Three survivors stood outside Kordyban Lodge to receive community support

It may not have been the event organizers envisioned it to be, but Prince George’s generosity once again took centre stage.

The 2020 CIBC Run for the Cure in the city went virtual as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but residents pulled through in raising $17,172 for the Canadian Cancer Society towards breast cancer research.

This beat the local branch’s initial $13,500 goal set in September by 27 per cent with more donations expected to come in.

In 2019, Prince George raised more than $29,200.

Following safety protocols, organizers had three breast cancer survivors stand outside the Kordyban Lodge this morning (Oct. 4) to witness a small parade.

Vehicles dressed in pink while handing out gifts, flowers and cheers in showing their support.

In a normal year, a five-kilometre run and one-kilometre walk would have taken place at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

Since 1992, Run for the Cue has raised more than $462 million nation-wide for breast cancer research and support.

This year, those that donate to support the Canadian Cancer Society, CIBC will match dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000.
