Another large-scale event will have a format change in Prince George this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
CIBC Run for the Cure organizers have announced the Oct. 4 event will consist of virtual as well as some physical components.
“Since we can’t meet in person this year, we have reimagined the CIBC Run for the Cure into a one-of-a-kind experience with both physical and virtual components," Tish Trevelyan, Prince George Run Director for the Canadian Cancer Society, says in a release.
“With new and innovative ways to participate, we’re asking all Prince George residents to join us to show people affected by breast cancer that they aren’t alone.”
Through a mobile app and website, those taking part can create and customize their own virtual runner, fundraise to unlock rewards as well as track their activity.
On Oct. 4, those participating can take part in the online opening ceremonies before they start the run or walk.
Organizers say the opening ceremonies will begin at 8:30 a.m., hosted by Canadian R&B singer Jully Black.
Other performers include the Barenaked Ladies, Jess Moskaluke and Carolyn Dawn Johnson.
Anyone wanting to participate can register for or donate to the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run For The Cure at cibcrunforthecure.com.
"Cancer doesn’t stop being a life-changing and life-threatening disease in the middle of a pandemic," the release adds.
"Every day, more than 75 Canadians are diagnosed with breast cancer. As a higher risk population, people living with cancer rely on the same healthcare system that is still responding to COVID-19 and its impacts. Now more than ever, the cause needs widespread support to ensure that no Canadian has to face breast cancer alone."
Since the start of the event in 1992, the event has raised more than $462 million for breast cancer research and support.
This year, those that donate to support the Canadian Cancer Society, CIBC will match dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000.
