Prince George Regional Correctional Centre has been locked down since Thursday morning as a "full scale" search for contraband believed to have been smuggled into the facility has been launched, B.C. Government and Services Employees Union representative Dean Purdy said.
Reached Friday, Purdy declined to elaborate on what they're searching for but did say it has created a safety concern.
"Whether it be a homemade shank within the jail, a homemade edged weapon, drugs that are brought in, any type of contraband that's inside the jail compromises the safety of the centre and also compromises the safety of the correctional officers that work there," Purdy said.
The Citizen is seeking comment from the provincial Ministry of Justice.
