PG soldier dies from Afghanistan blast

The Prince George soldier was extensively injured by a blast suffered on duty in Afghanistan on March 6. An improvised explosive devise detonated in his vicinity during a foot patrol west of Kandahar City.

The 21-year-old became the first soldier born and raised in Prince George to die in war since the Second World War. He was on his first operational tour.

The military said Cpl. Darren James Fitzpatrick died at the University of Alberta Hospital on Saturday as a result of his wounds.

The infantryman was a member of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry based at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton.

He had been treated at the Canadian base in Kandahar and a medical centre in Germany before being flown to the Edmonton hospital on Friday.
