The Canadian Cancer Society's largest fundraiser had its best year ever in Prince George.
The 2013 Relay for Life - Canada's only 24-hour relay - has raised $520,000 to date, breaking the 2008 fundraising record of $514,000.
"I want to thank the community of Prince George, all the volunteers, participants, sponsors and donors for their outstanding support of Relay for Life 2013," said team lead Helen Owen. "When we put the challenge out to be the No. 1 relay in Canada, Prince George grabbed the reins and took off running."
Money raised from the May 11-12 event is put toward cancer research and prevention and is also used to support people who are living with the disease. Last year, the relay raised $494,000, placing second in Canada to Coquitlam's $550,000 total.
Coquitlam's 12-hour relay takes place on Saturday.
"Relay for Life is a unique community event and Prince George has embraced it and set a high standard for others to follow. Thank you to everyone who was involved in any way - I am so proud to be part of this community," Owen said.
Locally, donations will be accepted until July. They can be dropped off at the Canadian Cancer Society Office (1100 Alward St.) or made online. Visit www.relaybc.ca and select Prince George from the drop-down menu at the top right of the page.
