It's officially the end of an era. The Prince George Hotel faced the wrecking ball today, giving many in the city something to rejoice.

But not everyone is pleased with the removal of the historic building.

Some residents, such as realtor and former Downtown Business Improvement Association president Kirk Gable, say the historical significance of the building is too precious to simply throw to the landfill.

However many downtown business owners see it as a fresh beginning. As the building, deemed an "eyesore" by many, comes down, it's anticipated that it will make way for a new facility meant to attract people to an area that's seen its share of challenges.

The corner may become home to a recently-reannounced Wood Innovation and Design Centre. Or it may be the site of a proposed performance arts centre.
