The Prince George branch of Crime Stoppers has won provincial honours. The local anti-crime volunteer group took home four awards from the B.C. Crime Stoppers convention held this past weekend in Kelowna.

The Prince George program won the Milestone Award for communities with a population between 20,000 to 80,000 people. The estimated amount of drugs seized from Prince George circulation in 2010 had an estimated street value of $5.4 million, thanks to Prince George Crime Stoppers, earning the provincewide recognition.

Prince George vice president Ron Polillo said, "the last 12 months have been record setting for the local program and it's nice to be recognized by our provincial board".

The innovative "Welcome Mat" program and the "Community Alert" columns written by the Prince George Free Press won in the "Special Reports" and "Feature Article" categories while CKPG-TV was honoured for its outstanding commitment to the program with ongoing public service announcements and crime reenactments.

The final award of the night went to Prince George president Jack Hooper for his leadership and outstanding commitment to Crime Stoppers.

"Prince George Crime Stoppers would like thank the local RCMP detachment for its outstanding support along with media and citizens of B.C.'s northern capital," said Polillo. "With your support over the past 20 years, we've built one of the strongest programs in Canada."

A fundraiser golf tournament is scheduled for June 18, as the next Crime Stoppers activity in the Prince George area.
