A cross-country search for the suspect in the armed robbery of a New Brunswick credit union ended Friday afternoon at a Prince George residence, police said Saturday.
RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said Mounties acting on a tip arrested 26-year-old Ronald Albert Canuel of Bathurst, N.B. without incident at around 4 p.m. on July 24, bringing to a close a hunt that spanned two weeks, seven provinces and over 5,000 kilometres.
"We received information that he was at a residence... and basically effected the arrest," said Douglass.
Caraquet provincial court in New Brunswick issued a Canada-wide warrant for Canuel Tuesday after charging him with robbery with a firearm, wearing a mask in the commission of an offence and failure to comply with a firearm prohibition order. Police laid the charges after a man armed with a firearm entered the Caisse populaire Restigouche in Campbellton, N.B. on July 10 around 11 a.m. and demanded money.
New Brunswick RCMP said the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in a grey- or silver-coloured vehicle.
In a statement issued last Wednesday, police said Canuel, who was considered armed and dangerous, was headed to B.C. and may have been driving a grey 2007 Chrysler 300. He was described as five-foot-eight, approximately 150 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Police also noted Canuel's several tattoos including a small star under his right eye; the letters DFA and Family First on his neck; Royalty Loyalty written on his collar bone; No Mercy written on his upper back; and a microphone on his upper left arm.
RCMP did not comment why Canuel travelled to B.C. or his connection to Prince George.
Police said Canuel is currently in custody and will be transported back to New Brunswick.
