Peta Mountain wildfire stabilizes

A growth spurt for a wildfire north of Fraser Lake appears to have come to an end.

A growth spurt for a wildfire north of Fraser Lake appears to have come to an end.

The blaze near Peta Mountain, about 20 kilometres north of the lake, remained at about 350 square hectares, wildfire management branch spokesman Dustin Eno said Wednesday after growing rapidly over the long weekend when lightning strikes swept the area.

A guard has been established on about 25 per cent of the perimeter's west flank and a 20-person crew backed by 17 pieces of heavy equipment and three helicopters are working on it, he said.

The fire remains the largest in this area and continues to put out "quite a lot of smoke."
