A pedestrian appeared to have escaped injury when he was hit by an SUV while crossing Fifth Avenue near Ogilvie Street on Monday evening, according to Prince George RCMP.

The pedestrian, who was using a marked crosswalk, was transported to hospital as a precaution, while the driver, who remained at the scene, will likely be charged under the Motor Vehicle Act, RCMP said.

The incident occurred at 5:30 p.m., when visibility is poor at this time of year.

Heading into this past weekend, when clocks were set back an hour and with daylight hours getting shorter, ICBC launched a campaign to reduce the number of pedestrian-related injuries and deaths.

Drivers are urged to proceed through intersections with care and look twice for pedestrians crossing the road particularly when visibility is poor, and give themselves extra time and space to stop in case a pedestrian suddenly crosses the street .

Drivers also also urged to leave phone or any other hand-held electronic device alone while behind the wheel and be ready to yield to pedestrians - especially when turning in intersections and near transit stops.

As for pedestrians, they're encouraged to always make eye contact with drivers and never assume that a driver has seen them and be careful at intersections and watch for drivers turning left or right through the crosswalk.

"Drivers may be focused on oncoming traffic instead of scanning for you," ICBC says.

Also, always cross at designated crosswalks, follow signs and traffic signals and never cross once the signal has turned yellow or red. Wear reflective clothing or gear and carry flashlights to make it easier for drivers to see you in wet weather, at dusk and at night.

And on rural roads without sidewalks, always walk facing the traffic so you can see oncoming drivers.
