A federal parolee was sentenced Friday to a further 297 days in jail for failing to return to his halfway house in Prince George.

Mervin Lynn Walkus, 38, went missing on August 27, prompting Prince George RCMP to issue an alert, and he was arrested on Sept. 6 when he was found at a local fast food outlet.

In the interim, the results of a urinalysis showed he had been smoking marijuana at about the time he failed to return.

It's not the first time Walkus got himself into similar trouble since he was released from prison on a long-term supervision order.

A long history of breaches, mostly for being unlawfully at large, was read out during a hearing in provincial court and, in 2014, he was sentenced to 322 days for breaching the order.
