Cottonwood Island Park and the Heritage River Trail from the Cameron Street Bridge to Taylor Drive have been closed due to rising river levels.

Barricades have been installed at parking lot entrances to notify visitors of the closure and warning signs have been installed at various locations in the park, the City said.

Paddlewheel Park and Hazelton Park are also now closed with signs installed and letters have been delivered to people living along nearby Farrell Street advising them to be prepared to evacuate.

According to the B.C. River Forecast Centre, the water level on the Fraser River at South Fort George was at about 9.0 metres as of Wednesday afternoon and forecast to reach to about 9.5 metres by Friday.

Home basements on Farrell Street can begin to experience flooding when the rivers reach about 10 metres, the City said.

The City has dropped off sand and sandbags at the north end of Farrell Street.

Nechako Riverside Park and McMillan Creek Fishing Park remain open. Staff are continuing to monitor the river levels.

"The City encourages residents to use caution whenever walking near the rivers, particularly during periods of increased water levels," the City said.
