Parent peeved at pool car

But city official gives change rooms the all-clear

Local parent Cayley Quinn is questioning the cleanliness of the Prince George Aquatic Centre after finding walls covered in hard water stains in the family change rooms.

Quinn said her young son is enrolled in swimming lessons. Since October she's found the walls of the family change rooms at the Aquatic Centre filthy with hard water stains.

"It literally looks like someone washed the walls with muddy water," Quinn said. "It's just hard water stains. But germs and bacteria can grow in that hard water scale."

Quinn, who works in the food industry, said all it would take is a little lime scale remover - available at any food industry supplier -to remove the discolouration. Quinn said she knows, because she has done it.

In October, she brought some lime scale remover to the pool and used it on the wall to prove her point.

"I just poured it on the wall and gently scrubbed, and it came right off," she said.

Quinn said she sent a letter to the city, and raised the issue with the pool maintenance staff, but no action was taken. On a visit to the pool on March 28, the walls of the family room was still dirty.

City aquatics manager Lana Keim said she doesn't recall ever receiving a letter from Quinn.

Keim said pool staff follow a regular cleaning schedule, which includes powerwashing the walls in all a the change rooms.

In addition, the pool is inspected regularly by health inspectors to ensure, she said.

After receiving a call from the Citizen, Keim said she checked the family change rooms herself.

"I didn't see any discolouration or scaling at all," Keim said.

However, if a member of the public does have a concern about any of the facilities at the city's two pools, Keim urged them to bring it immediately to the staff's attention.

Feedback cards are also available at both facilities if the person does not feel comfortable raising the issue in person, Keim added.
