Northern Health issued an overdose warning on Thursday, following an increase in overdose events in Prince George.

The illicit drug linked to the overdoses is dark purple and once "cooked" it turns almost black, a statement released by Northern Health said. The drug is being sold as fentanyl, or by the name "Down."

"This substance is highly toxic and may also be known as 'Fire,'" the statement said.

Northern Health is urging those who do use illicit drugs to carry a naloxone overdose treatment kit, and get trained in how to use it.

"Don't use alone. Make a plan and tell a buddy who can call for help if needed," the statement said. "If you plan to use alone, use the Lifeguard or BeSafe app available free on the app store or on the Toward the Heart website."

Overdose prevention sites in Prince George are located at the Needle Exchange at 1108 Third Ave. and Two Doors Down at 1126 Third Ave.

Fentanyl drug checking is available at the two overdose prevention sites.

If you see someone overdosing, call 911 immediately.
