Organ benchmark set

A record number of British Columbians received new organs in 2013. According to figures provided by B.C. Transplant, there were 346 successful transplants last year, an increase of 40 from the previous record set in 2012.

According to figures provided by B.C. Transplant, there were 346 successful transplants last year, an increase of 40 from the previous record set in 2012.

Kidneys continue to represent the most common organ transplanted, with 234 completed in 2013, including a record 127 coming from living donors.

There were also 21 heart transplants and two rare heart and kidney transplants. Combined living and deceased donor liver transplants totaled 61, there were 21 lung transplants and seven pancreas transplants.

While there was a record number of transplants, nearly 500 B.C. residents are still waiting for an organ. According to Transplant B.C., fewer than 20 per cent of residents have registered to become donors.
