Operation Red Nose provided 52 safe rides home on Friday -the first night of the volunteer service's season.

It was a strong start for the program, providing 12 more rides than during its first night of operation in 2012.

Fifty volunteers, including 12 road teams, drove people safely home in their own vehicles.

Residents who don't feel safe to drive their vehicle home can call the service at 250-962-RIDE (7433). Operation Red Nose will be running every Friday and Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m until Dec. 21 and on New Year's Eve.

"It was great to see a lot of new, first-time volunteers and they had a lot of fun," Operation Red Nose spokesperson Andrea Johnson said in a written statement. "Volunteers are still welcome to apply and they can do so at www.ornpg.ca. So far, 227 people have registered as we drive toward our goal of 350 volunteers."

To be eligible, volunteers must be 19 years old, have a valid driver's license and fill out the required criminal record check forms that are included in the application, which can be found at www.ornpg.ca. Print off the application form, fill it out and and drop it off at the community policing office at Fifth Avenue and Brunswick Street.

For more information, call volunteer co-ordinator Karen at 250-961-6465.
