With the start of spring, Prince George Fire Rescue is reminding residents that open burning within city limits is prohibited.
This includes burning grass, leaves, tree material and land clearing debris.
Local transfer stations and the Foothills landfill accept yard and garden trimmings - including tree branches up to 75 mm (3 inches) in diameter - for composting at no cost.
And the Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society provides information on home composting. For more information, call REAPS at 250-561-7327 or visit www.reaps.org.
Land clearing debris is accepted at Foothills landfill only and at a cost of $6 per visit for "small loads" up to 100 kg, and $72 per tonne for "large loads."
As for recreational fires, they must be contained in a permanent outdoor fireplace or fire pit not larger than 60 cm in diameter that is designed and constructed to confine the fire.
The fire cannot be within three metres of any property line, fence, standing timber, brush or building and it cannot be burning when an air quality advisory is in place.
