Open burning is once again permitted in the Prince George Fire Centre's jurisdiction as the risk of wildifres has decreased.

The public is reminded a burn registration number is required when burning piles larger than two metres high by three metres wide or a grassy area larger than 2,000 square metres.

To get a registration number residents can call 1-888-797-1717.

Campfires can be no larger than half a meter wide or tall. Anyone who has a campfire must have a shovel or at least eight litres of water nearby to extinguish the fire completely. Never leave a campfire unattended and always make sure ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area.

Open burning applies to all Crown and private land. People living in a town where local governments have open fire bylaws and there is a fire department must check with those authorities before lighting a fire.

Access restrictions are not in place within the Prince George Fire Centre boundaries although areas affected by forest fires may be hazardous because of dangerous snags, falling trees or ash pits.

The Prince George Fire Centre includes the Yukon and Northwest Territories to Tweedsmuir provincial park, the Cottonwood River and Robson Valley in the south and from Alberta to the Skeena Mountains.

To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call *5555 on a cellphone or 1-800-663-5555. For information on fire activity, conditions and prohibitions visit the wildfire management branch website at www.bcwildfire.ca.
