One new COVID-19 death in B.C., Northern Health drops down to 65 due to data correction

B.C. has had one new COVID-19 death over the past 24 hours, after going six straight days without any fatalities from the virus. 

In Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Health Adrian Dix's daily update, officials announced there have been 16 new cases of COVID-19 found in the province in the past 24 hours. 

The written statement says B.C. now has a recorded total of 2,709 test-positive cases to date. 

Northern Health has seen a drop in test-confirmed cases after the government says there was a data correction that leaves the authority at 65. 

There are 922 cases in Vancouver Coastal Health, 1,396 in Fraser Health, 130 in Island Health and 196 in the Interior Health region. 

Henry said there have been no new health-care facility outbreaks. In total, five long-term care or assisted-living facilities continue to have active outbreaks. There have also been no new community outbreaks. Health teams are continuing to provide support for the six ongoing outbreaks. 

Of the current cases, 2,354 people have fully recovered while there are 187 active cases. There are currently 12 people hospitalized with three of those cases in ICU. The one new death was recorded in the Vancouver Coastal Health region which brings the total to 168. 

"We have been monitoring our COVID-19 restart activities closely and are modifying our approach as we move forward," the joint statement says. "This includes amending the provincial health officer’s order for food and liquor service establishments to make restaurants and pubs safer for employees and patrons. The amended order goes step in step with enhanced worker guidance that is now available on the WorkSafeBC website."

“The requirements for this sector have been adjusted in response to small clusters of new cases in businesses, as employees spend more time together and in recognition that a safe number of patrons is highly dependent on the amount of space within each location, not the restaurant capacity. The best way for us to avoid spreading the virus is to ensure everyone, employees and patrons, have the space to stay safe."
