What will you be doing on Feb. 29, a day that only comes around every four years?
It signals an extra day to do whatever we please, and for some looking for a new niche or sport to try, that could mean getting into a sled and carving ice.
Prince George is set to host a free all-day para ice hockey development camp on Saturday, Feb. 29 thanks to a trio of sports groups.
BC Hockey, Northern Adaptive Sports Association (NASA) and Sportability BC will have representatives with participants, teaching everyone that attends on- and off-ice material.
Para ice hockey, also known as sledge hockey, is an internationally-recognized sport that competes at the highest levels, including the Winter Paralympics.
It encompasses a specially designed sled instead of skates while players use two sticks with metal picks at the end to get across the ice.
According to the event’s page, the camp later this month is welcome to all ages, abilities and experience levels and will provide two on-ice sessions to develop, learn and build para ice hockey skills, all while having fun.
The program includes a free lunch and all protective gear is available.
Prince George’s para ice hockey camp runs from 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 29 at Kin 1 Arena.
Prior to the start of the camp, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., there’ll be a mentorship class for those interested in coaching para ice hockey.
For more information and a full schedule, you can visit the camp’s Eventzilla page or contact NASA directly.
