Prince George will soon be celebrating Inspiring Women Among Us.
The City of Prince George has officially proclaimed Nov. 14 to 21 as Inspiring Women Among Us (IWAU) Week for 2018. It will offer a wide variety of free public events (open to all genders) celebrating women’s contributions to Canada and the global community.
The week is an annual series of events and celebrations leading up to the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on Thursday, Dec. 6.
Events kick off on Nov. 14 with flag raisings at city hall and the University of Northern British Columbia.
Some of the IWAU events coming up include: A keynote address by American activist and social justice entrepreneur Marissa Jenae Johnson, called “Thinking Outside the Box: Revolution by Any Means Necessary”; A workshop called "Two-Spirit: Cultural Reclamation and Positive Space"; and a ticketed fundraiser at Nancy O’s featuring jazz musician Andrea Superstein.
IWAU was started in 2015 at the University of Northern British Columbia by Drs. Zoe Meletis and Annie Booth. The first theme back in 2015 was Women, Science, and the Environment.
Since then IWAU has seen the Women, Media and Masks theme in 2016, and the Women, Work and Allies theme in 2017. The theme for this year’s week is "Women, Leadership and Power."
The activities during the week are open to everyone and explore ways that men, women and others can support women and other minorities in academia, the arts, media and society.

IWAU week is also looking for volunteers and anyone with time to spare is encouraged to visit the volunteer sign-up website or send an email to [email protected].
