While the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be here to stay, there are still opportunities to have some good old-fashioned family fun.

The Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum is hosting a social-distance style Family Fun Day with admission by donation on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Residents are encouraged to head down to the museum with the kids to walk among the giants of industry and stroll through the beautiful urban orchard and railway gardens.

There’s also going to be a scavenger hunt and self-led games and activities throughout the park.

You can also bring a picnic and enjoy lunch while listening to ukulele tunes or watch a movie in the Island Cache Theatre while munching on fresh popcorn and lemonade offered by donation.

You can peek into the Blacksmith Shop and watch the blacksmith in their forge.

The museum’s gallery is also open, which will host the exhibit “Beehive Burners Behind Us”, a collection of oil paintings by Lou Englehart that depict beehive burners from across B.C.

The museum says there'll will be a limit to the number of guests in the gallery, as well as directional signage to assist in movement through this exhibit, and to ensure appropriate physical spacing.

In terms of other COVID-19 precautions, the museum will have an increased cleaning regime, the addition of hand sanitation stations, safety shields at the reception area, additional signage, a revised disposable guide booklet, and a limited number of people inside the visitor centre, gift shop and industrial park.

The Cottonwood Minitrain, a familiar favourite at the museum, will not be operating for the public until regulations to social and physical distancing are lifted.

The event takes place from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 850 River Rd.
