Site C is nearing completion but new economic opportunities are powering up in northeastern BC.

The Site C project has reached one of its final key milestones with the successful commissioning of the fifth generating unit.

BC Hydro says this brings the project one step closer to completion, with commissioning and testing of the sixth generating unit currently underway.

The sixth unit is on track to be in operation by the fall.

“Commissioning the fifth generating unit at Site C is a significant step toward securing more clean and affordable electricity for communities, homes and businesses,” said Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix. “Congratulations to all the workers at Site C on your success in achieving this significant milestone.”

Since 2024, Site C has seen continuous development, with the first unit coming online in October, the second in December, the third in February and the fourth in late March.

Each of the six generating units produces more than 180 megawatts of electricity, enough to power more than 80,000 homes.

Once complete, the Site C project will generate enough electricity to power about 500,000 homes.

BC Hydro says this will boost the Crown corporation’s total electricity supply by approximately eight per cent.
