Number working reaches 52,500

A record-tying 52,500 people were holding down jobs in Prince George in January, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday. It was also the 11th-straight month the number employed remained above the 50,000 mark.

It was also the 11th-straight month the number employed remained above the 50,000 mark.

The previous longest stretch was six months, ending in December 2012 and peaking in September 2012 when the figure also struck 52,500.

The city's unemployment rate stood at just 4.2 per cent in January, down from 5.7 per cent during the same month last year, when 49,800 people were working.

The number unemployed but seeking work was 2,200 last month, compared to 3,000 the year previous, while 18,900 of working age were not participating in the workforce, up from 18,100 in January 2014.

The city's total workforce stood at 52,500, compared to 52,800 the year before.

In December 2014, the city's unemployment rate was 4.2 per cent while the number of people working was 50,700. The total seeking work was 2,200 and 17,800 were not participating.

The figures are based on a three-month rolling average and do not say how many are working full-time and part-time.
