The Northern Undergraduate Student Society is inviting James Moore to speak with students in January before it takes a position on the controversial appointment of the former Conservative MP as the university's next chancellor.
The student society will also organize a student opinion poll in response to community backlash to the appointment, including opposition from University of Northern B.C.'s Faculty Association.
"Our board is committed to engaging students on this issue to make the best decision possible. I hope that confidence and respect prevail in the coming weeks as this pivotal period in the university's story is navigated through," said Duncan Malkinson, NUGSS president, in the statement.
Reached by email James Moore said he enjoyed chatting with the board members Thursday.
"They asked great questions about UNBC, about my efforts as Chancellor, about my time in public life and about the university's future. I appreciated the conversation," Moore said.
"I look forward to meeting them again soon, as well as with other members of the UNBC community, as we move forward."
Since Friday an online petition has more than 1,900 people calling on the reversal of Moore's appointment. The Confederation of University Faculty Associations of B.C. has also come out against the move.
Moore is expected to start his three-year term May 2016.
