November weather made winter fun possible

November brought just enough snow to the Prince George region to get cross-country skiers and snowmobilers out on the trails.

November brought just enough snow to the Prince George region to get cross-country skiers and snowmobilers out on the trails.

While it was snowy enough for downhill skiers and snowboarders at alpine resorts, most of which opened midway through the month, it wasn't quite cold enough to make an outdoor rink.

The big midweek dump that hit the city on Nov. 16 and 17 left about 25 centimetres of snow in its wake, causing headaches for motorists who struggled to get through unplowed streets. That led to a total snow amount of 38.5 cm for the month, 106 per cent of normal amount for November.

The greatest snowfall in any one day in November in city history was 26.9 cm, set on Nov. 22, 1965.

Rain also fell in below-normal amounts last month, with a total of 13.8 mm recorded, 68 per cent of the normal 20.2 mm. The precipitation total of 50.7 mm was right in line with the 30-day average of 51.5 mm. Remembrance Day brought five mm of rain, the highest amount of any November day this year.

So far this year, Prince George has received 523.6 mm of total precipitation, 94 per cent of the normal average of 552.8 mm.

The coldest day of the month was Nov. 19, when it dropped to -26.3 C, nowhere near the all-time record low for the month of -41.7, set in 1955. The warmest day last month was Nov. 10, when the maximum temperature reached 8.7 C. The all-time warmest day of the 11th month was 17.4 C, recorded in 1981.

The mean temperature (the average of the high and low temperatures each day) for the entire month was -2.6 C, slightly warmer than the usual -2.9 C.

Daily highs averaged 1.2 C, compared to the normal 0.6 C, while the average daily low of -3.6 was a couple degrees warmer than than the -6.3 average.

A high of 0 C is expected today under clear skies, after an overnight low of -9 C. More sunshine is in the forecast for Saturday with a high of 5 C. There's a chance of flurries on Sunday with highs near the freezing mark.
