Northern voters could be shut out of B.C. Liberal leadership vote

B.C. Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon raised concerns Thursday that thousands of rural and northern B.C. Liberals have yet to receive their personal identification number needed to cast a ballot in Saturday's vote.

B.C. Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon raised concerns Thursday that thousands of rural and northern B.C. Liberals have yet to receive their personal identification number needed to cast a ballot in Saturday's vote.

"We've worked hard as a party to sign up thousands of new members, now we must make sure that those people have the chance to vote," Falcon said in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.

He called on everyone in the party to work to ensure northern and rural members get to vote.

The vote Saturday will decide who is premier. Gordon Campbell announced last September he was stepping down half way through his third term.

The Falcon campaign team called on the party to staff up the existing 1-888-281-8683 help line where members without a personal identification number can get answers and a new PIN.

Falcon's concerns were echoed by Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond, the transportation minister; and Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm

Both have endorsed Falcon.

B.C. Liberal Party officials were not immediately available for comment Thursday afternoon.

The PINs, which are needed to cast a vote via the Internet or by phone on Saturday, were expected to be in party members' hands by mid-week.

Other candidates in the Liberal race include George Abbott, Christy Clark and Mike de Jong.
