“Obviously they’re higher than I would like to see."

Those were the words from B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry yesterday (Aug. 6) after another 47 COVID-19 cases had been discovered.

Today was no different.

In a written statement this afternoon (Aug. 7), officials announced another 53 cases have been found throughout the province during the past 24 hours bringing the new total to 3,934.

Northern Health has no new cases keeping the total at 93. Yesterday, there were two new confirmed cases. An outbreak was also declared by the authority on Haida Gwaii on July 24.

Henry reported today there are no new deaths from the virus in the past day for a total of 195 while a total of 3,353 have recovered. There are 386 active cases in B.C. with 11 hospitalized and four in intensive care.

Today is the seventh consecutive day B.C. has not had a death from the virus.

Henry announced there has been one new health-care facility outbreak at Derby Manor in the Fraser Health region. There are five long-term care or assisted living facilities and one acute-care facility with outbreaks.

Officials added there are more than 1,500 people in B.C. that are self-isolating, unable to leave their home unless for medical care, because they have COVID-19 or have had a high-risk exposure to the virus.

"This is a concern and something we can change," adds today's statement from B.C. Ministry of Health.

There have been 1,167 recorded cases in Vancouver Coastal Health, 2,069 in Fraser Health, 147 in the Island Health region and 389 in Interior Health.

“As we see new COVID-19 hot spots emerge and the new cases creep up in every health authority, we have to keep our firewall strong," Henry said in the statement.

"Like a wildfire, COVID-19 has the potential to rapidly burn out of control and we need to put out these flare-ups."

“We can make a difference and we know what we need to do, because we have done so already. We are calling on everyone to make COVID-19 safety our way of life – this weekend and every weekend."

Henry also stressed again it is not the time for people to be lax and think the virus is gone or not in their community.

“Now is not the time to relax and let down our guard," she added. "Let’s keep our bubbles small, use our layers of protection and give people the space to stay safe."

“We have been leaders in how to protect our communities and how to restart our economy. Let’s continue to be the place that leads with kindness and compassion, that works together and keeps COVID-19 low and slow.
