Northern Health is one of B.C.'s best bosses, according to an annual competition.

The editors of Canada's Top 100 employers, also an annual contest, selected 60 organizations in B.C. to that status.

In its application, Northern Health highlighted programs, additional skills offered through the regional simulation training program and employee engagement efforts.

With 7,000 workers that cover two thirds of B.C., Northern Health noted the vast geography requires a focus on team building and different methods.

"Being named one of B.C.'s Top Employers for 2015 showcases the dedication and passion that our staff and physicians put into their work on a daily basis," said Cathy Ulrich, Northern Health's president, in the release.

The contest, now in its eleventh year, used eight criteria including physical workplace, work atmosphere, health, financial and family Benefits, vacation, employee communications, performance management, training, and community involvement.

"Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs," said Canada's Top 100 website.

Northern Health applied for consideration, as could any size company. The website doesn't say how many applications were submitted.

Northern Health said it has been successful with retention projects, and finding people for difficult positions to fill - defined as a job posting open for more than 90 days. It reduced that number to 60 in 2014 from 74 two years before, in large part due to increased advertising efforts.
