Northern Capitals salvage slight slump in Saskatchewan tournament with two wins

Mandi Schwartz Memorial is the biggest western Canadian female midget AAA event

Prince George’s best female hockey players were two provinces over this past weekend for one of the most prestigious tournaments on the calendar.

However, despite flying into Saskatchewan on a five-game win streak in B.C. Female Midget AAA League action, the Northern Capitals ran into tough competition against teams from across western Canada at the 2019 Mandi Schwartz Memorial.

By tournament’s end, the Caps finished with a 2-3 record and back-to-back victories on Saturday (Dec. 7) to redeem themselves after a winless preliminary round.

Brette Kerley potted two goals in the final contest, a 5-2 rout of the Westman Wildcats (Manitoba) who went 0-2-1 in group play.

The 16-year-old from Williams Lake currently leads the team with 10 goals and 13 points through 16 regular-season games.

Northern Capitals’ captain Paige Outhouse, Ocean Andersen and Pyper Alexander rounded out the scoring with Tessa Sturgeon getting the victory between the pipes.

Earlier on Saturday, the ladies’ first win of the weekend was a 3-1 score over Rink Academy, also from Manitoba and going 0-2-1 like Westman, thanks to the sharp goaltending performance of Cadence Petitclerc-Crosby.

Outhouse, Kiera Mulder and Hailey Armstrong lit the lamp in that contest.

The team’s results from the round-robin stage are as follows:

  • 6-0 loss to Edge Mountaineers (eventual tournament champions)
  • 3-1 loss to Saskatoon Stars
  • 2-0 loss to Edmonton Pandas

The Mandi Schwartz Memorial is known as the largest female midget AAA hockey tournament is all of western Canada.

Every year, 16 teams are invited to compete at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask.

The Northern Capitals don’t have a B.C. regular-season game until the new year when they face-off in a four-game inter-league tournament in Coquitlam.

They take on both Vancouver Island and Fraser Valley on Friday, Jan. 10 to start that weekend.
