Northern B.C.’s pandemic death toll continues to grow

The COVID-19 pandemic claimed two more lives in the Northern Health region, the B.C. Ministry of Health reported on Thursday.

The deaths bring the region’s death toll from the pandemic to 306. Seven COVID-related deaths have been reported in northern B.C. so far this week, and eight were reported last week.

The ministry reported 108 new cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region on Thursday. The province stopped reporting on the number of active cases earlier this month.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Northern Health region was immediately available from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. On Wednesday, the B.C. CDC reported that 66 people in the north were hospitalized with COVID-19, including 14 in critical care.

During the week of Feb. 13 to Feb. 19, 202 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Prince George local health area, the B.C. CDC reported.

As of Thursday, nearly 11.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., and 90.6 per cent of eligible British Columbians (aged five and older) had received at least one dose of vaccine. The Ministry of Health reported that 86 per cent of eligible British Columbians haver received two doses of vaccine, and 55.1 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received a booster dose as well.
