Northern B.C. rest stops to get upgrades

Two rest areas in northern B.C. are scheduled for makeovers this summer.

New modern playgrounds will be installed at the Cluculz Lake rest area on Highway 16 and at the 80 Mile rest area on Highway 97 north of Fort St. John.

Landscaping will also be in store for Cluculz and the benches and fencing will be upgraded at 80 Mile.

"The work will be performed this season, with expected completion this fall," the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said in an email. "Each project is expected to cost $85,000."

Three rest areas along Highway 1 will also get some work: Skuppa rest area south of Lytton; Kamloops Lake rest area west of Kamloops; and the Arbutus rest area on the Malahat Highway north of Victoria.

In addition, as many as 30 seasonal students will be hired to provide landscaping and enhanced maintenance of rest areas, covering several highway corridors throughout the province, the ministry said in a press release

Planning, engineering and design work are also underway for three projects aimed at supporting the the trucking industry:  Highway 1 Kamloops brake check west of Kamloops; Highway 1 Columbia rest area west of Revelstoke; and Highway 5 Clapperton brake check north of Merritt.

Government will also explore options for commercial vehicle access and parking to be built along Highway 1 near Golden. Planning, engineering and initial site development will start this year.
