With school back in session, there may be times when young students will be walking to-and-from home on their own.
An incident in northern B.C. last week has prompted Mounties to issue a reminder for school-aged kids to always be aware when walking alone.
On Thursday (Sept. 11), Kitimat RCMP were notified of a ‘suspicious incident’ involving an older man asking an 11-year-old girl if she needed a ride.
According to a release, she was walking home from school around 12:15 p.m. when a black SUV pulled up beside her, the driver offered a ride and she said ‘no’ before the suspect drove away.
There was no other interaction between the two, RCMP explained.
“When you are out alone keep your head up, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings,” says RCMP S/Sgt Graham Morgan.
“We encourage the public to report any suspicious incidents to the police.”
Mounties are hoping to identify the male suspect in this incident, described as:
- White
- White hair
- No facial hair
- No glasses
It’s believed the suspect is possibly driving a black Chevrolet SUV, but no license plate number was given to police.
