No May queen in the parade

For the first time in decades, a new May queen will not be crowned in the Elk's May Day parade Saturday in downtown Prince George.

For the first time in decades, a new May queen will not be crowned in the Elk's May Day parade Saturday in downtown Prince George.

Elks member, Howard Lloyd, said things just didn't work out to have the May queen event or post-parade ceremony at city hall this year.

"I guess it had to do with organization as well the work, like landscaping and planting, going on at city hall, but we will have last year's queen and princesses riding in the parade."

Elks members are wondering if the annual May parade will be able to continue at all due to lack of community help and interest.

The Elks, Royal Canadian Legion and Shrine Club will jointly discuss the future of parades later this year.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to enjoy what possibly could be the last such parade in the heart of the city. The procession begins at 11 a.m. at the Coliseum and will proceed west down Seventh Avenue and pass through the Civic Centre Plaza and Ninth Avenue. It will turn right onto Victoria Street and proceed north to Third Avenue, and east to George Street back to the Coliseum.
