Zero new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Northern Health region over the weekend, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said on Monday.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic claimed another life in the region over the weekend, Henry said. With the latest fatality, the Northern Health region's death toll from the pandemic grew to 156.
The death in the north was one of five reported by Henry on Monday, including a person in their 20s who lived in the Interior Health region.
"COVID-19 continues to make people ill, and in this case lead to the more serious illness possible," Health Minister Adrian Dix said.
The number of active cases in the Northern Health region dropped to 45, down by four from Friday, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control data released on Monday. Five people in the region were hospitalized with COVID-19, all of whom were in critical care.
Since the start of the pandemic there have been 7,800 cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region, of which 7,598 people have recovered.
Across the province, 4.8 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 229,461 doses in the north (157,604 first doses and 71,857 second doses), according to the B.C. CDC.
As of Monday, 76.8 per cent of eligible British Columbians aged 12 and up have had at least one dose, and 28.5 per cent have had both doses, Henry and Dix said.
The province's vaccine campaign is working, Henry said. Only 145 cases were reported in B.C. over the weekend, and the number of active cases remaining dropped by 15 per cent to 930.
"In many communities across British Columbia there were no cases this last week," Henry said. "In a few small places there are still clusters of cases."
Henry declined to comment on whether the province would be moving to Stage 3 of its restart plan on July 1, but Premier John Horgan is expected to speak about the issue at a press conference scheduled for 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
However, she did say "things are looking very good" across the province.
Anyone who hasn't registered to be vaccinated can do so by going online to www.gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated or phone 1-833-838-2323 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily.
