BC Housing has taken over the city-owned former Cadillac Ranch and is turning it into office space.

"I am not at liberty to disclose that tenant at this time but they are proceeding with renovations to make it ready for their occupancy later this year," said Ian Wells, the real estate manager at City Hall.

The Citizen has learned the new tenant is BC Housing. The provincial government's real estate services wing will be moving out of its current Prince George location at 1539 11th Ave. and into the former Cadillac Ranch space.

"We've simply outgrown the current facility - largely due to the relocation of positions from the Lower Mainland to Prince George," said a BC Housing spokesperson. "These positions have all been staffed by local residents. We believe this will enable our team to provide a higher level of service to our partners and clients in the north. The move is expected to be completed by year's end."

Terms of the lease agreement were not disclosed.

Prior to the Cadillac Ranch's closure in early 2009 after repeated legal and liquor infractions, the spot was home to another noted live music venue, the Rock Pit.

The only other establishment within its walls was the family restaurant Bib And Tucker, the inaugural business in that spot when the lease was taken up by the Van Oord family in about 1979. They relaunched it as a live music bar.
